What are sports injuries?
There are many different types of sports injuries, and they are not always caused by sport. Some examples of common injuries are;
- Sprained ankle
- Knee pain/injury
- Hamstring or calf strain/tear
- Tennis/golfer's elbow
- Sprained wrist
- Shoulder/rotator cuff injuries
- Groin strain/osteitis pubis
- Shin splints
Causes
Sometimes theses injuries arise through direct trauma or injury but often the onset is gradual. Your physiotherapist can help identify the cause of your symptoms and are experienced in assessing, diagnosing and treating these injuries. In most cases the injuries can be completely alleviated with proper management.
There are some injuries that are common with certain sports;
- Football/Rugby - Shoulder, knee, ankle injuries and osteitis pubis
- Soccer - Knee and ankle injuries
- Hockey - Lower back and knee problems
- Netball/Basketball - Ankle and knee injuries
- Swimming - Shoulder injuries
- Volleyball - Shoulder and ankle injuries
- Running - Knee and foot injuries
- Tennis/Squash - Shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle injuries

Physiotherapy Management
At Flinders Avenue Physiotherapy our physiotherapists have expertise in treating a wide range of sporting injuries. Physiotherapy should start as soon as possible, preferably on the day of injury. Treatment continues from the acute phase to full recovery and exercises will be prescribed to prevent reoccurrence.
Our physiotherapy management of your injury will vary depending on the problem and its cause but may consist of;
- Massage and myofascial release techniques
- Ultrasound and acupuncture for tissue healing
- Strapping
- Provision of support brace
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Sport-specific rehabilitation
- Core stability exercises
- Provision or orthotics
