What is Pilates?
The Pilates method of exercise focuses on improving wellbeing by learning how to move efficiently. The emphasis of Pilates is on learning HOW to move in an efficient way, using the correct muscles to support and protect the spine and other joints.
At Flinders Avenue Physiotherapy we teach Clinical Pilates which means we use specialised Pilates equipment to assist or resist the exercises. We have a maximum of three clients per class and also offer individual sessions. Each client undertakes different exercises specifically designed for their needs to help them achieve their goals. This ensures continual progress and variety.
Benefits of Pilates
Most exercise works on your global muscles without specific attention to the stability muscles. Stability muscles are the small, deep muscles that assist in protecting the spine and other joints. They contract prior to movement commencing to stabilize the joints. Research has shown that improved activation of the stability muscles can minimize the likelihood of injury. Pilates strengthens these smaller stability muscles whilst improving general strength and flexibility to provide efficiency and quality of movement.
Some of the benefits of Pilates are;
- Improved posture
- Reduced back and neck pain
- Strength and conditioning
- Improved flexibility
- Better balance and co-ordination
- Prevention of injuries
- Better performance in sport
- Better core stability
- Stronger pelvic floor
- Better breathing
- Improved health and wellbeing
Who is Pilates suitable for?
From the 10 year old to the elderly, PILATES CAN BE ADAPTED TO SUIT ALMOST ALL NEEDS. It is safe and effective and compliments the medical management of many injuries. At Flinders Avenue Physiotherapy, each client has an individual programme aimed specifically at their problem areas and targeted at an appropriate level for them. The programme is flexible and is generally progressed within each session which ensures continual improvement.
How do I book?
To book your Pilates sessions you need to complete a bookings form which you can print from the link below, contact us to have one mailed to you, or collect from our clinic. When booking, you will need to complete an initial assessment if you are just starting with us and indicate how many sessions you would like to book.
The initial assesment is an individual session of one hour duration. Our trained Pilates instructors will assess your posture, flexibility, muscle strength, and core stability. If you are attending to rehabilitate an injury, they will assess specific areas to identify the cause of your symptoms and what we need to work on to correct the problem. During the initial session, we use real-time ultrasound imaging to assess correct activation of your pelvic floor and core abdominal muscles.
We recommend booking a block of 10 subsequent Pilates sessions and ask that you think ahead with your bookings since the classes are very popular. Most of our clients choose to continue once they have started Pilates with us so we are generally fully booked about a month in advance.
What to bring and wear
Wear comfortable, loose clothing and bring a clean pair of socks. Please also bring a bath towel and some water. Before your initial assessment you will need to drink 2-3 glasses of water 20 minutes before your appointment. This is to enable us to use the realtime ultrasound in assessment of the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles.
